Whether new to Van Ness or returning to our school, all families must annually complete the enrollment process.
Enrollment will be online via the ASPEN Parent Portal starting March 29th (the same one used to view report cards, etc.) Returning families will access the online enrollment platform to re-enroll their student(s) through their parent portal user account.
If you will be returning to Van Ness, we need you to confirm your current contact information so that you can access your parent portal account.
Please complete the following form to confirm your email address and phone number: Van Ness ES: Contact Information for ASPEN Parent Portal Access (Current Students Only)
In addition, on March 25th DCPS will be centrally resetting the passwords for all current Van Ness families who have not accessed the ASPEN Parent Portal. The email will be titled "Welcome to the ASPEN Parent Portal". Please test and save these credentials, as families will use the same log in ID email and password to access the online enrollment platform starting March 29. If you have any questions, please contact the main office.

DCPS offers seats for 3-year-old children in PK3 and seats for 4-year-old children in PK4. Per DC Municipal Regulations (DCMR), families may enroll children in PK3 if they are 3 years old and in PK4 if they are 4 years old, respectively, by September 30.
All families interested in enrolling a child in PK3 or PK4 must complete an online application through the My School DC lottery within the application window: Mid-December - March 1. This is required for families with a residential address that is in-boundary as well as out-of-boundary.
If your child is matched through the lottery for the 2024-25 school year, you must enroll your child by May 1, 2024. If you do not enroll your child by May 1, 2024, you may lose your space at our school.

Do I have to enroll every year?
Yes! Families must enroll their students each year in school.
Why should I enroll ASAP once enrollment begins?
The sooner you enroll (starting March 29, 2024), the sooner the Van Ness leadership team has the information they need to inform planning and class assignments.
What is an acceptable proof of residency?
Families must provide proof of residency when completing the enrollment packet. Only one item is needed if you supply a pay stub, documentation of financial assistance, certified copy of Form D40, military housing orders, or an embassy letter. See the full list of ways to verify residency here.
Which health forms are required?
DC Universal Health, which includes certification of immunizations, and Oral Health Assessment forms are due by the first day of school; however, you may enroll before the forms are completed. Learn more about the forms and submission here. For an FAQ about immunization requirements, click here.
Am I in boundary for Van Ness ES?
Families who live within the Van Ness ES boundary may enroll their child(ren) at any time during the school year. Any child living in-boundary is guaranteed placement in Kindergarten through Grade 5. Families who live out-of-boundary, or those seeking placement in pre-k4, may apply through the DCPS Lottery System. To check for your in-boundary school, visit the school locator at myschooldc.org.
Do I need to let Van Ness ES know if I'm moving?
Please inform the front office at if you do not plan to enroll at Van Ness ES next year to inform planning efforts.
